The Spotlight Between Us
A reflection on love, fear, and the strength found in uncertainty, where a muse becomes both the anchor and the force pushing the speaker toward the unknown.
You said it would be cruel to turn off the lights, so I kept watching you dance until the entire stage was marked. As you spun, I thought you were the most elegant thing I’d ever seen. This stage, and the stories it held, were about to become a monument of my adoration for you.
The time had come for me to outgrow my stage fright and all the nightmares tied to the spotlight.
I’ve had muses before you, but none of them gave me the tough love you have. They would stand by and watch me crash the ship into the shore when the waves became too much. But you? You gripped my hand and reminded me of what I chose when I called myself your captain.
This ship sails on. We’ll never know where it’s headed as well as we know our stage, but I’m ready for the uncertainty with you. I’m afraid of drowning, but somehow I find the courage to brace the storm, day after day. All my memories of a place without an ocean, a town without a theatre, grow distant until they’re eclipsed by the lights.
